As
many as 15 million children have no place to go
once the school bell rings. These children are
at greater risk of being involved in crime or
risky behavior. Youth who are in afterschool programs,
meanwhile, do better in school and have greater
expectations for the future. It is for this reason
that the C.S. Mott Foundation, the Afterschool
Alliance, and the Ad Council have partnered to
develop a Public Service Announcement campaign
promoting the importance of afterschool programs.
These PSAs use humor to communicate the importance
of taking action to support afterschool programs.
The campaign includes TV and radio spots, newspaper
ads, billboards, web banners and more. The ads
were developed pro bono by DDB in Chicago.
The Alliance cannot afford to buy media time to
run these ads. We rely on media to recognize the
relevance of afterschool as an important community
issue, and to run the ads during time slots that
have not been sold to advertisers. You can even
participate by posting afterschool
web banners on your website.
That is why your voice is so critical to the success
of this campaign. We urge you to contact your
media. Encourage them to run these ads because
afterschool programs matter to you. Tell them
you are concerned about the after-school hours
and what resources are available in your community.

Getting these PSAs run is a simple way to make
sure that your community hears about afterschool
programs that keep kids safe, help working families
and improve academic achievement.
